Silk Flowers for Memorial Day
Remembrance.
Using Patriotic Colors to Create a Silk Flower
Arrangement.
Silk flower stems and bunches come in a wide variety of colors.
You can coordinate them, or use them to complement, any décor.
You can also choose colors to create a stand-alone themed
arrangement. Here are some silk flower suggestions to create
your Memorial Day red-white-and-blue creation:
o Red: Rose, daisy, day lily, tulip, cherry blossom, peony,
poppy
o White: Lily, rose, delphinium, daisy, hyacinth, lilac, poppy,
hydrangea
o Blue: Irises, cosmos, delphinium, hyacinth, hydrangea,
lilac
Of course, these are only a few suggestions. The patriotic
possibilities that silk flowers offer are practically
endless.
Memorial Day’s Historical Roots
1868 saw the first Memorial Day, in the form of Decoration Day.
The first ceremony was held at Arlington National Cemetery,
where the 20,000 Union dead, buried there, were honored.
Memorial Day was officially declared a United States national
holiday in 1971.
Though different regions of the United States honor the fallen
on different days, Memorial Day is generally recognized on the
last Monday of May. Memorial Day and Veterans Day are often
confused. Memorial Day is reserved for those soldiers who have
died, while Veterans Day is celebrated in honor of all
in-service and honorably discharged members of the U.S. Armed
Forces.
Third Sub-head: Using Silk Flowers to Decorate Headstones
Tradition dictates that flower arrangements be placed at the
headstones of fallen soldiers on or around Memorial Day. Common
types of containers include cones (which are inserted into the
ground), wreaths (which are usually supported by special wire
frames), and cemetery logs (oblong flower boxes).
Before decorating your loved one’s gravesite for Memorial Day,
it’s important to consult with the management or caretaker of
the cemetery. Certain rules apply for the adornment of
headstones, and the rules differ from cemetery to cemetery.
Some common regulations include:
o No glass containers
o Particular types of planters and arrangements are only
permitted during particular times of the year. For instance,
Easter and Memorial Day arrangements must be removed within a
week after the holiday
o All flowers must be removed before the onset of winter
o Occasionally, a notice will be issued asking people to remove
flowers for mowing, weeding, or other lawn maintenance
o Often, cemeteries reserve the right to dispose of tattered or
neglected silk flower arrangements
Remember to consult with the proper authorities for the
decoration rules of your loved one’s burial place.
Fourth Sub-head: Why Choose Silk Flowers for your Memorial Day
Remembrance?
Unless you live next door to the cemetery, stopping by a
gravesite to water a fresh flower arrangement or potted plant
everyday can become quite a burden. That’s why Memorial Day
silk flowers make perfect sense. Plus, you can use your special
silk flower arrangement year after year.
As Randy Vader has said, “The story of America’s quest for
freedom is inscribed on her history in the blood of her
patriots.” Though many of the wars in which our soldiers have
fought may seem to have been forgotten, we can remember by
honoring our fallen with gifts of thankful thoughts and
flowers…because, thankfully, the freedom that they have
afforded us lives on.
