Silk Flowers’ Arrangements with Nature
Silk Flowers for Lovers of the Outdoors
Edward O. Wilson, in his 1984 book titled Biophilia,
hypothesizes that humans often find themselves subject to a
phenomenon that draws them to other living things, even those
that are inanimate. He cites an inherent “love of life or
living sytems” as a real reason for the attraction.
The word biophilia can be broken into two parts: bio means
life, and philia is the opposite of phobia. The resulting
definition? The attraction to all life.
So what does this mean to interior decorating? It means that
the walls of your home are no longer boundaries to the
outdoors. Now they can be preserves, conservatories, and media
for enjoying your attraction to all that is natural.
Decorating Suggestions for Biophiliacs
If you love being surrounded by elements that Mother Nature
herself would be proud of, consider incorporating some of these
items into your interior décor:
o Bare branches, or branches that have maintained some leaves,
seed pods, or berries
o Evergreens like pine or holly branches
o Pinecones, plain or glittered for the holidays
o Abandoned bird nests
o Weathered wood
o Grapevines (soaked in water for pliability)
o Animal remnants (snake skins, snail shells, turtle
shells)
o Rocks, stones, and pebbles
o Seashells
o Nuts
o Corn stalks and/or husks
o Autumn leaves (pressed by a heavy book)
o Cinnamon sticks and herb leaves
o Native American corn
o Whole fruits (pumpkins, gourds, apples, lemons, oranges,
limes)
o Standing or flowing (fountain) water
All solid items, like shells and rocks, can be plunged into
boiling water for sanitizing.
Or, invite the elements that you cannot harness into your
home:
o Do away with heavy drapes, and enjoy the sunshine.
o Open windows to allow fresh air to waft through your
home.
o Place birdfeeders (including hummingbird feeders) outside
windows for viewing.
o Bird houses will give you a front row seat to view the life
cycle of birds.
o Butterfly and bat houses, visible from the house, will add
color and life to your views.
Biophilia to Fool Even Mother Nature
What if you enjoy the look and feel of natural elements, but
have allergies to the pollen that some of them bring along? Or
what if you’re too busy to replenish the things that wither and
wilt?
Silk flowers and plants, and faux berries and fruits, offer the visual
appeal of nature, without the maintenance, watering, and
replacement. Don’t be shocked if you find Mother Nature
peeking in through your open windows. She’s sure to want
to get a closer look at those most perfect silk flowers and plants - flawless
reproductions of her own handy work.
