Be Sure to Wear Some Silk Flowers in Your
Hair.
Flowers in Your Hair…in San Francisco and
Otherwise.
It was 1967, and promotion for the Monterey Pop Festival was
u nderway. John Phillips of the Mamas and Papas wrote a
song, and Scott McKenzie sang it.
The name of the song was San Francisco, and it helped to usher
in the hippie era. It also re-romanticized flowing hair
entangled with wildflowers…freedom and a oneness with the
natural world.
If you’re going to San Francisco,
Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair.
If you’re going to San Francisco,
You’re gonna meet some gentle people there.
For those who come to San Francisco,
Summertime will be a love-in there.
In the streets of San Francisco,
Gentle people with flowers in their hair.
For those of us who remember the music of the 60s, this song
likely opens the memory flood gate. And for the rest…we can
take fashion example from some of the coolest people in
history.
Silk Flower Hair Accessories fit into no
Box
Though inspiring, hippies aren’t the only type of people who
wear flowers in their hair. Floral hair decoration can range
from jeans-casual to wedding-formal. What could be more
innocent and lovely than a hair wreath of daisies? Or more
tropical than a hibiscus nestled among locks at a candlelit
Luau? Or white roses coupled with pinned curls atop an elegant
ball gown? Flowers are the perfect understated, yet
sure-to-be-noticed accessory for any outfit.
Want to personalize your style? Add a silk flower to your hair,
and bring the femininity back to fashion.
Making your own Silk Flower Hair Accessories
Got a glue gun? Some hair accessories? Some silk
flowers? Then you can have cutting-edge fashion in a flash.
Start by cutting stems from your favorite silk flowers, so that
the bases of the blooms are flat. Then simple apply a dab of
hot glue to the base of the flowers and attach them to bobbi
pins, barrettes, head bands, or elastics for fuss-free
accessorizing.
Or, embellish your up-do (bun, French braid, twist) by cutting
the stems to two inches in length and inserting into your
swept-up locks. Avoid spraying hairspray after inserting the
silk flowers - the residue can dull their appearance. Instead,
secure with pins if necessary.
Silk Flowers for Hair, Ageless and
Timeless.
There’s no age minimum, or limit, for using silk flowers to beautify your
hairstyle. What could be cuter than a baby’s head elastic,
dotted with daisies or tiny roses? What could be prettier than
a floral hair wreath on a Sweet Sixteen? Sexier than a
narcissus or lily peeking out from behind an ear to frame a
blushing face? More sophisticated than a regal rose nestled in
a backdrop of silver?
Traditionally, a flower is worn on the left side of the head if
the wearer is married or otherwise unavailable. In some
cultures, like that of Hawaii, a bloom on the right side of the
head is as good as an invitation to male admirers.
Innocent or sophisticated…trendy or timeless…silk flowers bring the same
elements to a hairstyle as they bring to a room or special
event. Plus, they won’t wilt by the end of the day, and can be
used over and over again. So use your creative genius (or help
from your favorite hairstylist) to develop your own signature
style, or to make that special occasion more special…from a
backyard barbeque to prom night…and from San Francisco to New
York, and beyond.
